Prep Transition

We aim to have each new child settle into school life as smoothly as possible.

Each year, children from the local pre-school visit the school with their parents and caregivers and participate in activities in the Prep classroom for a one hour session with the Prep teacher.

From April to July we offer our Art for Tiny Tots program to pre-schoolers to familiarise them with a primary school environment. Children attending 3yo or 4yo kinder are invited to participate in a series of six art sessions, with the assistance of their parent. Bookings are essential!

Greensborough Primary School also offer “Stories At School” for pre-schoolers – a fortnightly storytime and craft session in August and September. (See Calender for dates) Bookings are essential – Contact the school for more information.

In early Term 4 our Prep Transition Program for children and parents is conducted over four weeks. Children attend school on one morning a week from 9.30 -10.30am and participate in learning activities in the Prep classroom with the teacher. During this time parents are invited to attend an information session in the library where information is presented about our school from a variety of personnel.

At the beginning of the school year our Prep children are well supported in their entrance to school life. Initially, the Preps finish earlier than the normal school dismissal time of 3:30pm, and then the Prep timetable changes to a 3:30pm finish for 4 days per week (Wednesdays off) for several weeks.

Preps are supported well in the playground. Our new Preps are easily recognisable by their name tags and become quickly known to all staff. At first our Preps are restricted to playing in the supervised Prep playground at recesses to establish their confidence. Once settled in, a strong Buddy System operates, pairing each Prep child with a child from Grades 5 and 6.

Preps attending the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) program are taken to class in the morning and taken from class in the afternoon by an OSHC staff member during Term 1 to assist Preps with settling into their new routine.
